Climb Vertially at Sand Dune Park
What looks to be a super easy climb is nothing but. Even those in the best of shape start off climbing the hill till their heart starts pounding so hard, they must sit down. "How can this be? It's just sand on a hill."
Yes. Sand collapsing under your feet with each step upward is not for the faint of heart or the I-haven't-worked-out-since-2010.
But it is fun. Make a reservation to climb/play or watch those on the hill here. Then come with drinks, snacks and good climbing shoes or socks. No barefeet as this is sunny CA. The sand can get hot! Then you'll be tired and "hot-foot dancing" on sand.

Did someone say "Best place to Surf"??
Manhattan Beach is long and beautiful. Yet if you love to surf or want to take a lesson and try surfing for the first time, look no further to the end of our Strand. There from 38th street to 45th Street, right where the beach meets the Chevron Oil Refinery, passionate surfers, students to CEO's of very large companies, rise before the sun to crush waves. Even if you don't want to get wet, watching these men and women ride is so worth your time!
Fun Activity:
Order breakfast in El Porto at either The Local Yolk or Cafe-Wild and take your food to go and watch the surfers!

Celebrate History at Bruces Beach
In 1912 and 1920, Willa Bruce purchased two lots of land along the Strand in Manhattan Beach. Americans of African descent, the Bruce family had moved West seeking opportunities of the American Dream. Shortly after purchasing the land, Charles and Willa Bruce turned the location into a seaside resort that welcomed Black beachgoers from all over Los Angeles and became colloquially referred to as “Bruce’s Beach.” The land was

Ice Plant...?
In 1912, Manhattan Beach was a giant sand dune. And in order to build a city, we had to move massive amounts of sand to Hawaii. And sadly with the sand went t most of our native plants. In order to stop the remaining sand from blowing away, the city planted a greenery called "Ice Plant" that grows deep roots and spreads quickly over the sandy hills and stops the sand from blowing.
Today visitors loves Ice Plant because it holds the sand in place and needs little water, yet beach residents hate the Ice Plant because the roots grow so deep, they are extremely hard to remove.
See if you can find Ice Plant at the beach!
